It All Starts Tomorrow!

  • Spring Turkey Season for the North Zone of Texas officially begins tomorrow at dawn!
  • I wish I could hunt tomorrow, but I'm waiting for the camera man to get back from Oklahoma and my SRB Field Rests to come in.
  • I actually won these field rests on Facebook through a contest that a group called Predator Slayer was hosting.  Check them out, they are just a young group of guys that enjoy predator hunting. And my winning number was 63!
  • The picture above was sent to me from Dylan Rottner of Decatur, Texas.  He is playing golf down at La Cantera in San Antonio... he called them up while playing. That a boy!!!
  • AND TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO SIGN UP FOR THE TURKEY CONTEST! Sign up now or go turkey hunting and regret it later!

Things On My Mind!

  • So far 22 teams have signed up for the Turkey Contest we are hosting.  That puts the pot for first place over $400 not including the fan and beard mount. Only 3.5 more days to sign up!
  • For those of you down in Waco, the World Predator and Wild Hog Expo is April 19-21 at the Waco Convention Center.  I wish that was a little closer to North Texas.
  • From what I hear, the crappie are biting, and biting very well!
  • Gobbler season has already started in the South Zones of Texas! This Saturday, us here in the North Zone will have at it!
  • Since it is the beginning of Spring Turkey Season, here are a couple of simple recipes.
  • If I would have had a slingshot, like the one in the picture, when I was in my youth... there would have been trouble everywhere! I may even get one for my boy and let him have at it, they are very expensive.  Passing cars better lookout!
  • I thought this was a pretty genius idea! Mojo came up with a magnetic stick, the "Pick Stick", for picking up all of your empty shotgun shells.  I'm not sure how well it works, but I may give it a try before my back gives out from bending over to pick them all up next dove season!
  • Good luck to all the Turkey hunters here in North Texas this weekend and hopefully I'll be scoring a couple of bird for the contest.  I will make sure and take pictures of the birds as well!

Thunder Chickens...

There is actually a team signed up for the Turkey Contest with the teams name, The Thunder Chickens.  I have heard it before, but it still makes me smile... and reminds me of the weight loss commercial where they mention "Thunder Thighs".

Water is Water to a Duck!

A friend of mine from Dallas just posted this on her Facebook wall. Mallards just hanging out in her pool... It's a little too cold for me, but hey, they may be enjoying the hot tub as well! They even left a nice little gift before they left...

Things On My Mind!

  • 29% (750,000) of the wild hog population in Texas was eradicated last year... and it wasn't enough.  Now they are going to use what they call a "Judas Pig".  Interesting, and curious to see how it will work.
  • Don't take feral hogs across Texas State lines, and don't bring them in either!  This guy wanted to raise a hog to be like "Hogzilla".
  • That photo up above cracked me up... I'm sure there are those out there that truly take this photo to heart and have shed tears over it!
  • Now that the logo is done, the new website should be up and running soon.  It's going to have all sorts of new features, including a forum... you guys can just post your pics in it and of course we will still have the blogs.
  • I never would have thought that hogs would have been a reason for quail becoming a more rare bird.  There are some other things in this article I would not have thought.  Of course, fire ants are at the top of the list.
  • Only 7 more days to sign up for the Turkey Contest! I think it's going to be a better turnout than what I expected!
  • Good for Montana, but in Texas, we have limitations... and all I can think about is the Simpson's character, Cletus!
  • If you're interested there is a Turkey Calling Contest at Cabela's in Allen, Texas tomorrow at 1 p.m.... it seems like a good time to just go and watch!

Winners Got Their Check...

...and it will be a big surprise when they try to cash it!

Eagle Mountain Lake Gator

Seems this guy has been spotted a few times and has gotten quite large!

The Saginaw, Texas News says this Gator was spotted by the docks near Kelly's cove on Eagle Mountain Lake, but it looks photo shopped to me!

A Freak Deer From Paradise

Dewayne Arant shot this freak out near the small town of Paradise, Texas in Wise County. It is a little bit past deer season, but rest assured, it was taken during deer season.  Very nice freak buck!

And this guy was killed killed Saturday morning by Garrett Mullins of Bridgeport on March 16 in West Texas near the Red River.  I had to post this because I just admire any man that shoots pink arrows! Not just for the style, but it makes it a lot easier to find your arrows!

When the Contest is Over...

All the big ones seem to show up! At least that's what happened to Johnny Lanier of Decatur.

In 10 Days...

I want one of these!
Notice the double beard on the left!

Too bad I will not be entering the Turkey Contest myself, but that only makes it fair!  10 days left to sign up!

One Good Dog

A good friend had to put down one of the best hunting dogs I have ever had the pleasure of hunting with.  He has picked up thousands of birds for us... and will be missed!  For those of you that know this dog, know he was one heck of a retriever and hunter, sometimes coming back with 2 or even 3 ducks at a time.

Rest in Peace

Rednecks With Paychecks

I saw this on Facebook and got a pretty good laugh!  This is a picture of all the things the clean up crew has found out at Rednecks with Paychecks over the weekend.  For those of you that don't know this is supposedly one muddy, drag racing, four wheeler wreckin', redneck party that takes place up in Montague County in the little town of Saint Jo.  Well, the picture isn't what got me chuckling, but the comments underneath the picture on Facebook are hysterical

One guy saw the keys to his fourwheeler in the picture, but he still doesn't know where his fourwheeler is... he later started complaining saying he recieved a PI from the police and was taken to jail, and I quote this from him "Next time when y'all arrest someone have the respect to put their property in a safe place now my quads gone an I got arrested for a f**kin pi thought we was suppose to get drunk their".

Pure redneck gold and I sure am glad I do not attend, even though I probably am missing out!

Things On My Mind!

  • Texas Parks and Wildlife is saying that the drought could actually impact turkey hunting this year... I drink enough water everyday, so I think I should be fine to kill a Turkey this year, no problem!
  • The Wise County Messenger did a little piece on the Hog Contest.  Not a bad article, but they left out this website, which is a little disappointing. Should help with the publicity of the contest though!  Here is the article:  High On The Hog
  • I have no idea why I wasn't notified about a BigFoot Convention going on in Fort Worth over the weekend!
  • We have our new logo almost completely finished for the new website... and we like it!  Now time to get the new website up and running!
  • An older video of a Cougar taking down a 160 class Mule Deer... never gets old!
  • Not much happening today but I had some pictures sent to me this morning so I will get around to posting them in just a little while.
  • Not long till sign ups are over for the Turkey Contest!
  • "The only good coyote is a dead coyote!

Pre-Season Turkey Calling

I couldn't help myself the other day when I went to the lease to throw a little corn and check some cameras.  I just had to see if there were any Turkey around.  So with a little mouth call I was able to call in a Tom and 2 Jakes.  They came close enough to throw a rock at underarm style. The video isn't great, but the sound of gobbles when they start getting close is awesome!

Wood Family Spring Hog Hunt

The Wood Family of Boonseville started a new Spring Break Tradition of a family Hog hunt. This one weighed 261 lbs. and I think was actually caught Hog Doggin'!

Last Week Hunts

Teresa Hix of Decatur - First Hog!

Wendell Wiggins sent me this... I think they had a good time!

Cyler Green of Runaway Bay 1st Hog with a crossbow

My newest mount is back from Rut Country Taxidermy in Boyd, Texas.
I like it!

Things On My Mind!

  • Cooler corn? A little different way to cook corn...
  • We've though about posting our new logo options on here and letting you guys vote on which one you like best, but still are not sure...
  • The Hog Contest sure had a lot of criticism saying that it was a rigged contest... NO WAY JOSE'!  I would not support a rigged contest in any way, and those of you who know me, know that I wouldn't.  Andrew Gage and Cason Caraway hunted almost every day during the contest and they are 2 of the most honest hunters I know.  The situation might have been crazy, but they will take a polygraph to see if any rules were broken before they get the prize.
  • Now I'm not saying they might not want to change some rules, but that isn't up to me... I still think it was one great contest, and one BEAST of a hog!
  • I'm ready to get on a turkey, it's been a while since I've fired the shotgun... and I miss it! I'm sure there are some of you out there feeling the same way!
  • I'll repost this video of Corbin Green's video "Backflips" since Turkey Season is just around the corner!
  • I believe this Texas man had the right idea with the wrong bird... Don't mess the Eagle, son!
  • You just gotta love Ted!
  • I just found out that when using a cell phone to comment on one of my posts, it does not work as well... or at all!
  • There are some people that just have the luck of driving down a highway and hitting the only deer in a 10 mile radius as they are crossing the highway... for those of you that do, start keeping score... the people's car in the picture above already have.  Nothing to be ashamed of... it's better than swerving and hitting a tree!

Idaho Wolf Pack

Check out the size of these wolves. Idaho has a huge wolf problem thanks to the animal do-gooders that don't understand what their actions will cause problems in the future. Scroll all the way down:

This is a picture of a pack of 25 wolves taken in the Weippe area in Idaho. Each one of these eats 24 Elk per year. This group alone will consume 600 Elk this year. That doesnt even factor in the sport kills.

The Canadian Gray Wolf runs in packs of up to twenty wolves. For every one animal they kill to eat, these Canadian wolves kill about three more just for the fun of it. The biologists call it "sport-reflex killing" or "lustful killing". The Canadian Gray Wolf is a killing machine. These are federal wolves, as it was the federal government who introduced them into Idaho over our objections. They told the State of Idaho that the wolves would be considered recovered when they had a total of 100 wolves in Idaho .

Now they have between 800 and 2,000 wolves and the situation is out of control. Idaho 's wolf emergency is a state issue. And in this situation, the State of Idaho has both a duty and the authority to protect its people and their property. House Bill 343 lays out the facts, the argument and the authority to do so. - Idaho Rep Phil Hart. Can you imagine gun control out there.

This is not a good place to let the cat out. Make sure you are packing protection when you go for a walk in the mountains. You never know when a wolf pack might surround you! Remember Uncle-Governor Andy Cuomo only wants you to have 7 rounds in you gun and no more than 2 magazines, too. If you are a GREAT shot, that still leaves 6 to 11 wolves to chew on your butt. Enjoy your stay.

This was a great year for the hog contest with 81 entries and hopefully will have more next year.  Kory really had his hands full with weighing over 30 hogs, sometimes in the middle of the night just to make sure they were weighed within the 24 hour time slot allowed.  Stay tuned and we will have pictures of the winners with their checks, after they have taken the polygraph, and there should be an article coming out soon in the Wise County Messenger regarding the Hog Contest! A big Thank You! to everyone who entered and hopefully next year we will also have some prizes and raffles that everyone can enter as well!

Romanian Boar Hunts

This hunt seems like it would be an experience like none other. Of course they put the best pics on the Internet, but still, that is one crazy looking hog!

"This boar hunt is full of adrenalin and it is recommended only for the bravest of hunters. Danube Delta boar hunting is not for the faint hearted. The boar hunt preparations, the beaters, the very difficult terrain, and the skills of the dogs, all matter for the success."

Things On My Mind!

  • Jeff Thomason, from the show Predator Pursuit, is offering people a chance to go bear hunting with him up in Alaska.  They have 5 spots available at $3500/spot.  Does not include travel fees, but everything else is included. Here is the link to his Facebook page if you are interested.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife turns 50 this year!
  • Found this article from back in 2011 about a Feral Hog Poison that would only kill hogs and do it within minutes.  Don't know if it didn't get approved or what, but I can't find the stuff for sale anywhere!
  • 2 Days left in the hog contest... now it's time for the Gobbler Contest!
  • Here is another hunting website that is a non-profit that gives scholarships and is designed to promote big game hunting, Texas Big Game Awards.  They also throw a contest for the largest scoring big game of Texas.
  • The company that is supposed to be making up our new logo sure is taking its time.  We are on a schedule here and they don't seem to support the little guy... I'm sure once we get the logo though, all will be good! They are very good at what they do!
  • You gotta love a good Wild Boar vs. Car video!
  • Or a great clothesline maneuver by a police officer.  Intense!!!
  • If you'll notice in the picture above, that is Tyler Chapman of Decatur, Texas, and he was pretty scared of hogs at the time... especially the hogs in the left of the picture that were coming to feed under the feeder, while he was under it!  Great action shot for the game cam!  To finish the story off, he dove in the bed of a pickup not too far from him. Guess he thought they were really coming for him!
