Turkey Kill

A friend of mine sent me this picture of a turkey kill in Nacogdoches.  I always like seeing pictures of hunts, but this one really surprised me after I learned a few things about the hunt!

1.  His dad shot the turkey!
2.  His dad is right at 69 or so!
3.  His dad also shot it with a BOW (looks like a long bow)!
Which happens to also be his first kill ever with a bow!

How many 69 year olds are out there slinging arrows at turkey these days,
much less, just slinging arrows at all?

In The Cooler

A buddy just sent me this... It was either thirsty, or just needed a cool down and was in the beer cooler at Wise Liquors.

N.C. State Saltwater Striper Record

One Big Fish...

Seventeen-year-old Tyler Shields of Murphy, North Carolina, thought he was fishing for largemouth bass when he visited Hiwassee Lake on March 31. What he boated instead was a 66-pound striped bass that shattered the state’s freshwater record—and topped by 2 pounds the North Carolina saltwater striper record as well.

Rat Hunting...?

I have never heard of rat hunting, especially with night vision, but this looks like it could be kind of fun.  I remember being in high school sitting by my parents shed with a BB gun waiting for mice to come out and actually hitting a few, but never anything like this.  I wonder if somewhere in the world someone is making a living selling rat hunts...

Helicopter Hog Hunt w/ Crossbow

I knew that someone had to come up with a different kind of helicopter hunt to make this more interesting... lets go for grenade launchers or something of that sort next time... I think that may be the only thing left to do!

Barnett Crossbows™, one of the several brands owned by Synergy Outdoors™, is pleased to release the unofficial, first ever video of feral hogs being eradicated using a Barnett Ghost 350 Crossbow out of a helicopter. The video and hunt was arranged with the help of Heli-Hunter, located south of Dallas, TX. Matt Busbice, President of Synergy Outdoors and well-known TV personality from Wildgame Nation was the hunter asked to help with the eradication. Matt agreed and took it one step further and said, "Let's try to do it with a crossbow". Matt explains, "People thought it was ridiculous to even try to take hogs with a crossbow. There were so many elements working against me -- moving targets, prop wash which can affect arrow flight, distance, downward angle adjustment, and cocking a crossbow by hand. The speed to reset the weapon is lengthened significantly compared to a firearm." The video footage captures all the action and excitement of this eradication hunt. "It was all adrenaline and fist pumps when we succeeded in clean hits on the hogs. We knew we had accomplished something special, helping the landowners and beating the odds in this challenging scenario" explained Matt. The Ghost 350 crossbow is one of the lightest bows ever manufactured by Barnett. Weighing in at a light 7.6lbs, I could shoulder it and know as long as I considered the other factors it would be accurate. The 350 FPS speed provided plenty of power to get the pigs down.

Corbin Green from Runaway Bay, Texas filmed this and shot the turkey as well... He also has a lot of other videos, just search for him on YouTube.

Wounded Warrior 2012 Hunt - Hog Dogs

WARNING: MAY BE GRAPHIC

These are a few of the pics from our hunt. Chewy is the guy in the black tee with the beard (USMC). I'm wearing a green pearl snap. you cant see my face in these, mostly action shots. In the last pic is Arturo (blue tee), our mexican ranch hand guide. He picked up a rock to stand guard in case the hog broke towards Chewy. Chewy has had his prosthetic leg about a year. Which makes him relatively new to it. He was more than willing to push the envelope. We had him in a muddy creek stabbing this boar.

Mushroom Hunters find 200 inch Buck

A monster Oklahoma whitetail found by a mushroom hunter has the hunting world buzzing after the Boone and Crockett score tipped out at 199 4/8 … and it could have been higher!

Landowner and cattle rancher J.W. Hart owns the skull and typical antlers, which he said were found by a friend of his who was hunting mushrooms on Hart’s 80-acre property. The tract is not high-fenced, he said, and is surrounded by a 2,000-acre tract whose owners do not allow anyone to hunt.

Hart believes the deer died sometime during the harsh winter of 2011. If not for some rodent chewing on the tips of the long, majestic and near-perfectly matched tines, the “Oklahoma Mushroom Buck” could have topped 200 inches.

“It’s bleached out and has chew marks on the tips,” Hart told Deer & Deer Hunting. “Even with those, it’s still 199 4/8. I don’t know anything else about it, if it was hit by a car or a hunter shot and lost it, or if it just died. Our winter last year (2011) was one of the worst we’ve had.”

Street Gangs in Alberta, Canada

From an email:
STREET GANGS IN CALGARY , ALBERTA

It's gangs like these that the people of Calgary have to put up with...

A bit different from the problems in other cities...

It proves that every City has their own "unique" gang problems. They Roam the streets and yards night and day.  They hang out in even the best neighborhoods..and you CANNOT (legally) stop them.

Those are some lawn ornaments!!!

I know what you're thinking, cause I'm thinking it too!

Phil Robertson - The Duck Commander

History of the Duck Commander I found on Wikipedia. I thought it was interesting.

Phil Robertson was born and raised in Vivian, Louisiana, a small town near Shreveport. With seven children in his family, money was scarce and very early on, hunting became an important part of his life.

As a high-school athlete, Phil was All-State in football, baseball, and track hich afforded him the opportunity to attend Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship. There he played first string quarterback ahead of Terry Bradshaw. Phil’s been quoted as saying "Terry went for the bucks, and I chased after the ducks." After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and a Master’s in Education, he spent several years teaching. While his students claim he was an excellent teacher, spending time in a classroom brought Phil to the conclusion that his time and talents would be better spent in the woods.

Phil and his family, which by this time included wife Kay, and four boys, Alan, Jase, Willie, and Jeptha began a quest to turn his passion for hunting and fishing into a livelihood.

Never satisfied with the duck calls that were on the market, Phil began to experiment with making a call that would produce the exact sound of a duck. A duck call for duck killers, not "world champion-style duck callers." Claiming, "No duck would even place in a duck calling contest." And so, in 1972, the first Duck Commander call was born. Phil received a patent for this call and the Duck Commander Company was incorporated in 1973.

His home became his "factory" from where the calls were assembled, packaged, and shipped. Phil traveled store to store in the early days, with most ending in rejections. A certain large store in Stuttgart, AR laughed him out of the building (Oh, yeah, that store is now one of Duck Commander’s largest accounts.) Phil’s wife and four sons assisted in the packaging and shipments of the calls along with helping to run the nets, and take the fish to the market. This family side business of commercial fishing kept food on the table while Duck Commander Company was getting off the ground.

In the mid-70’s, Phil turned his life over to the Lord and made some dramatic changes in the way he was living. Phil Robertson is not only known as the Duck Commander but is now building a reputation all over the country for his faith and belief in the Almighty. He is invited to speak to hundreds of different churches and organizations every year, telling them what the Lord has done for him and can do for them.

Duck Commander is still a family business with all four sons and their wives working for the company at one time or another. Duck calls are still being built, blown, packaged and shipped in the Robertson’s home on the Ouachita River, although now their home is surrounded by several offices and warehouses to help the company smoothly, and the nets are still being run, only now the fish that they catch feed all the Duck Commander employees. Yes it’s a rough life, but as Phil says "somebody’s gotta do it."

Since 1973, Duck Commander Products, which now include much more than just duck calls, have been sold in all fifty states and in several countries. Not long after the success of the calls, Phil began a series of videos that developed a worldwide fan-base of fellow duck hunters. The Duckmen videos revolutionized duck hunting with there rock-n-roll, "in yo face" style, and are the leading authority in the industry. His calls and techniques are helping others bring the ducks right into their blinds, and the Duck Commander faithful swear by the deadly effects of the Duck Commander.

It isn’t often a person can live a dream, but Phil Robertson, aka The Duck Commander, has proven it is possible with vision, hard work, helping hands, and an unshakable faith in the Almighty. If you ever wind up at the end of Mouth of Cypress Road, sitting face to face with Phil Robertson, you will see that his enthusiasm and passion for duck hunting and the Lord is no act- it is truly who he is!

Virginia Man Carves Amazing Buck out of Pine

From an email:

Not quite a "saw dog", but pretty damn close. West Virginia native Terry Phillips obviously discovered a hidden talent when he decided to see if he could take scraps of pine leftover from a hunting log cabin he was helping build, and turn them into a masterpiece that's worthy of hanging next to any mount. And what's even more amazing is that this was Terry's first time carving anything! Working off and on, the project lasted about six months. His wife Mary sent us a few pictures of the process that we're sharing here!
